Book Review: Ten Thousand Skies Above You by Claudia Gray

Getting to the end of the 2016, I cannot believe it and I'm actually getting to the end of the my 2016 book reviews.  Can you believe that I have reviewed pretty much all the books that I read in 2016?  I only have a couple more books and a few Graphic Novels and Novellas to review, which the novellas and GNs I will do it in a bundle post shortly after I'm done reviewing all the books and then that's it, starting all over again with a new year and a new reading list.  2016 wasn't a great year in some personal ways but it sure was a great reading year, I read so many great books and I got to read some books out of my comfortable zone that I loved it and finally I got to some series that I have had in my shelves for a while and that I also fell in love with, overall an amazing reading year.  But as usual I'm getting off topic and let's get to today's topic and today's book review, which is another trilogy that I still have to finish lol...(let's not go there at least today eheheheh)

Ten Thousand Skies Above You by Claudia Gray

17234659

The firebird trilogy is like something I never read before and each book so far hasn't disappointed me.   In this second book Marguerite is back, she has been able to resist helping the enemy in the dominating the multiverse that is until they hurt one of the people's that she loves, her boyfriend Paul.  Paul's soul is scattered across multiple dimensions and she has no choice but to search for each splinter of Paul's soul.

While searching and getting Paul's splinters back, Marguerite finds herself on dimensions that she didn't even think it would exist, one of them a war-torn San Francisco, another a criminal underworld of New York City and a glittering Paris and each of them with a shocking secret about someone, either herself or Paul or another person dear to her.

After leaving each dimension, she starts to question the destiny she thought is was so certain and that she kept seeing on all dimensions she had visited before.  Was she right?

In this book Marguerite not only has to save Paul's soul but she ends up figuring out her own soul and feelings.  But the most interesting part is all the secrets she gets to find out while visiting all the dimensions she didn't know it existed.  I cannot wait to find out how it all wraps up on the next and final book.

4 out of 5 stars for this one.

Book Review: The Mirror King by Jodi Meadows

While last topic I talk about a book that was part of a trilogy that I still had to finish, today's book review is part of a duology that I did finish (well if you don't count all the novellas that I still haven't read, FAIL).  Let's just jump to the review and talk about how the duology finished :)

The Mirror King by Jodi Meadows

26000259

Wilhelmina is ready to take her crown, but declaring herself queen also means declaring war and she isn't sure if that's what she really wants.  Her magic is all over the place and her wraith boy is also uncontrollable, but willing to do anything for her.

Wilhelmina is caught between what she wants and what is right and even having a throne may not matter.  The wraith is destroying the Indigo Kingdom villages a lot quicker than they thought it would and she has to think quickly what to do to save not only her Kingdom but her people too.

While she thinks that her ability may be just the thing to help save her kingdom, it could also ruin it forever.  Will she do it?

Wil had so much going on in this book, she had to think about her magic and what is was causing and been afraid to use it and hurt herself and people around her.  But she also had to start thinking about her kingdom and her people and that meant take her crown back finally, but it also meant war and she wasn't ready for it.  But a queen is never ready, is she?  Then she had the wraith boy and she just wasn't sure what to think of him, as he was willing to do anything for her, anything AT ALL.  And then there was Tobias and their feelings for each other and decisions to make and so much happened to them that broke my heart into millions of pieces and it wasn't just one time either, multiple times.  Thanks Jodi Meadows.

Over all, it was a great ending, but there was some parts in the book that dragged, but I still enjoyed it a lot and I totally recommend this duology.  4.5 out 5 stars.

Nelia

Book Review: Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys

I'm only going to start his post by saying that you should all read this book and give it a chance, even if you don't or do like WWII books or movies, I'm sure you will find something to like about this book.  And now I'm just going to get to this book review:

Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys

25614492

Winter, 1945.  Four teenagers.  Four secrets.

Each one born of a different homeland; each one hunted, and haunted, by tragedy, lies...and war.

As thousands of desperate refugees flock to the coast in the midst of a Soviet advance, four paths converge, vying for passage aboard the Wilhelm Gustloff, a ship that promises safety and freedom.

Yet not all promises can be kept.

This book, OMG, I don't even know where to start...Ok, so the book is told by four different POV, FOUR.  When I first read that, I wasn't sure I was going to like, because let's be honest, four different people point of views?  That's crazy to keep up with, but once I started reading?  Ruta Sepetys is a freaking amazing author, that's all I'm going to say to that, her writing just captivated me from the first page me and I just could put it down and was it hard to keep track?  Heck no, it was actually really easy and you start to fall for all of them and cheer for them or hate them or cry for them or want to hit them or...you just have lots and lots of feelings reading this book, and that's putting it light.

Back on track of the review, so we get four teenagers during WWII and they are all from different places and somehow end up crossing paths, but they are all on a different time on their lives and they all want something different too, and let's not forget that they are all keeping a secret.  But somehow, they end up together and end up creating a friendship even though they don't want (well at least three of them), the fourth one ends up helping them most of the way but he is someone totally different from them and you get to see it at the end of the book.

While aboard the Wilhelm Gustloff, their secrets start come to light and while they don't know what to do it them, they are faced with something way more dangerous and have to rely on each other to survive.  And...I can't say anything else because you just have to read the book to find out all about it or I will spoil the book and I don't want to do that.  But trust me be prepared for friendships, love, heartache and be prepared to cry, but there is a happy ending too.

My rating?  5 out of 5 stars, once I finished this book, I kept thinking about it days later and until this day I still think about it, that's how good it was, I totally, totally recommend it.

XOXO,

Book Review: Sapphire Blue by Kristen Gier

I read lots of books this year and I have many that became my favorites but series that became my favorites?  Not many, but this book that I'm reviewing today and that is part of a trilogy?  Yeah, definitely one of my favorite trilogies this year.  I love the characters, I love the concept of the book and everything about it, so let's jump right into the review:

Sapphire Blue by Kerstin Gier

12637458

Gwen's life has been crazy to say the least since she found out that she is the Ruby, the time-traveler and part of the secret Circle of Twelve.  In between searching through history for the other time-travelers and asking for a bit of their blood, she's been trying to figure out what all the mysteries and prophesies surrounding the Circle really mean.

But she has help, first her best friend, Lesley follows every lead diligently on the internet, James her ghost friend teaches Gwen how to fit in at the eighteenth century party and Xemerius, the gargoyle demon who has been following Gwen since he caught her kissing Gideon in a church, offers advice on everything even is she doesn't need it.  And let's not forget Gideon, the Diamond.  One minute he is nice and charming to her and the next he is cold and rude.  She doesn't know why, but she will find out, don't you worry.

This book was everything I was expecting and more, I love, love Gwen, she is funny and isn't afraid to ask anything, which makes her the perfect best friend to have.  And when she is having a hard time learning to fit in the centuries that she needs to go to, she is just so funny and so out of place and she just fits somehow.  Gideon?  I don't even know where to start, I think he has a good heart and really likes Gwen but he also has been in the Circle for a very long time and feels obligated to them.  But he will eventually realize who is right, right?  Yeah.

The side characters are the best in this trilogy, they are funny and you get a gargoyle demon as a side kick, yeah the best for sure.

To finish it up 5 stars out of 5, I love it and totally recommend it.

Book Review: City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare

The Mortal Instruments, I can't believe that I'm still reading this series and it's not because I don't like it because I really do, so...I have no clue, is it because the books are so big that they intimidate me?  Probably, but I did pretty good this year, I only have one more book left and I'm going to try to get to it this month, not promising anything :)  But this post is all about reviewing second to last book of the series and let's get to it:

City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare

8755776

Clary does everything is can to find Jace and when she does she can't believe that the demon Lilith magic bounded her Jace together with her evil brother Sebastian and the worst is that Jace has become Sebastian's servant of evil.

The clave is out to destroy Sebastian no matter what, but harming Sebastian is the same thing as harming Jace.  Alec, Magnus, Simon and Isabelle wheedle and bargain with Seelies, demons and the Iron Sisters to try to save Jace and Clary plays a dangerous game of her own.  The price of losing is not just her own life, but Jace's soul.  Clary is willing to do anything for Jace, but can she still trust him?

This book got so much better than the last one, lots of more action and there was a purpose actually.  They all had to find a way to same Jace and Jace?  OMG, I never thought that you could hate and love a character at the same time.  But it was all worth it, ALL of it.

Sebastian?  If there is a character so well done, it's him, I cannot wait to see him portrait it in the new series on CW because in the books he is the best villain.

4 out of 5 stars, I cannot wait to read the last book and find out how it all ends and then I cannot wait to jump into Lady Midnight and see what all the fuss is about :)

Book Review: Princess of Thorns by Stacey Jay

I really love reading retellings and I have had this book for a couple years now and it was about time that I read this retelling about Sleeping Beauty's daughter.  Let's check it out:

Princess of Thorns by Stacey Jay

18782855

Princess Aurora may look like a typical mortal but she is fairy blessed with enhanced strength, bravery and mercy yet she is also cursed to destroy the free will of any male who kisses her.
Disguised as a boy, Aurora enlists the help of the handsome but also cursed Prince Niklaas to fight legions of evil and free her brother from the ogre queen who stole Aurora's throne ten years ago.

Will Aurora will over evil and reach her brother before it's too late?  And can Aurora and Niklaas break their curses that is keeping them from finding their one true love?

This book was cute but at the same time we still see lots of action.  And of course this is something totally different from what we are used to, ogre queen?  Yes, that surprised me too, so expect to see her and more ogres also and with powers.  And Aurora is not your typical princess, she isn't afraid to fight and get dirty and she proves it time after time to Niklaas.  And Niklaas is so funny and at the beginning you don't know what to make of him but you grow to love him.

Overall it was another good retelling, 4 out of 5 stars.

XOXO,

Nelia

Book Review: Ruby Red by Kristen Gier

This year I started so many series, trilogies and some of them were some that I have had in my shelves forever but I hadn't had time to read them yet and then I read and now?  Now, they have become some of my favorite books of all time.  This next book is book one of a trilogy and this trilogy has become a favorite of mine for sure, I love the characters and the setting and concept of the books?  AMAZING!!!
Let's review it:

Ruby Red by Kerstin Gier

8835379

Gwyneth Shepherd's beautiful cousin Charlotte has been trained and prepared her entire life for traveling through time.  But one day, out of the blue and unexpectedly, Gwyneth, takes a sudden spin to a different era!  Yeah, instead of Charlotte, Gwyneth is the one with the gene of time travel and she hasn't had any training what's or ever.

Gwyneth now needs to find out why her mother lied to her about her birth date to ward off suspicion about her ability, brush up on her history, and work with Gideon--the male time traveler from the other gifted family that passes the gene through its male line, and whole presence becomes, in time, less insufferable and more essential.  Together, Gwyneth and Gideon journey through time to discover, who, in the 18th century and in contemporary London, they can trust.

This book was freaking amazing, more than amazing, Gwyneth is so funny, she isn't afraid to speak up and let everybody know that she hasn't been training her whole life for this job and therefore the reason why she isn't so perfect at it.  And by the way why can't they trust her?  Yeah, one of her family members stole something prior to her but she is not her, right?  And why all the secrets?   I just love her.  Gideon got on my nerves at the beginning because he was such a rule follower but then I warmed up to him and he is pretty cute and funny too.

And can we talk about time traveling, I want to time travel too, 18th century?  That's so freaking cool, right?  And get to talk to your other family members?  WOW, that was sooo freaking amazing.

Okay I'm going to stop gushing about it and just tell you that I gave it 5 out of 5 stars because that's the max you can give lol.  And if you haven't read it yet, DO IT.

XOXO,

Nelia

Book Review: The Fixer by Joseph Finder

Let's talk about reading books out of my comfortable zone and this one that I'm reviewing today is a great example of it.  It did help that the story took place in Massachusetts lol.  But seriously, a mystery, thriller, suspense book?  Yeah, not something that I'm usually looking for but I picked up and I really enjoyed it and now I am so read more books by this author, that's how much I enjoyed it.  But I'm going to stop babbling so much and get to the review:

The Fixer by Joseph Finder

23281921

Rick Hoffman just lost his job, his fiancee and his apartment, so what can the guy do but move back into his dad's house.  However the house is empty, old and pretty much falling apart since his dad had a stroke and end up in a nursing home, so he decides to renovate the house.

When Rick starts to pull apart the old house, he makes a discovery that changes his life forever-millions of dollars hidden in the walls.  It's enough money to completely transform his life but also change everything of what he thought about his father.  So, he decides to find out more about his father's hidden past but while doing that the more dangerous he finds himself in.  Soon, he finds himself running away from deadly enemies that wants to keep the past buried and the only solving the mystery of his dad--a man who hasn't been able to communicate, comprehend or care for himself for almost 20 years, will save Rick.  Will Rick survive?

This book was good, Rick was always on the go, the poor guy couldn't take a break, every time he thought he was getting closer to something, something else would happen.  The mystery was hard to uncover and his father?  No help, because he wasn't able to communicate at all, because of his sickness so Rick had to do it on his own.  So, if you like a good mystery and suspense book?  Definitely give this one a try.  4.5 stars out of 5.

Book Review: Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

By now you all have read or at least heard about this book, or if you haven't read the book you have probably watched the movie, right?  I have read and watched the movie and I actually loved both of them.  Surprise, I know, I know...even though the movie had some things that were different I ended up still liking it a lot and I now that I'm talking about it I want to watch it again :)  But, today I reviewing the book, so let's get to it:

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

9460487

Sixteen year old Jacob travels to a remote island off the coast of Wales with his dad.  The reason that he travels there is for him to find out more about his grandfather, who is passed away now but when he was a kid he had lived there and Jacob needs to know why this island was so important and special to his grandfather.  In the island Jacob finds the ruins of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and he decides to explore its abandoned bedrooms and hallways.  While walking around the abandoned ruins Jacob realizes that those children were more than just peculiar, they may have been dangerous and they were on a deserted island for a reason and as impossible as it may seem they may still be alive.

Jacob finds himself in an adventure that he never thought he would be and worse he finds himself having to make a decision that he never thought he would have to.  And most important he now understands and believes his grandfather more than ever.

It took me forever to read this book and I'm going to confess it was because of the strange and creepy pictures in the back and throughout the book, but once I started reading and got into the story?  OMG, it was amazing and I couldn't put it down.  I totally, totally recommend this book, 5 out of 5 stars!!!

End of Days by Susan Ee

Review time and I cannot believe that I finally read and finished this trilogy, so happy that I did though...let's do this:

End of Days by Susan Ee

18500665

Penryn and Raffe are on the run after escaping the angels.  They are desperate to find a doctor who can reverse the twisted changes inflicted by the angels on Raffe and Penryn's little sister.  As they set off in search of answers, revelations from Raffe's past unleashes dark forces that threaten them all.

The angels realease an apocalyptic nightmare onto humans and both sides are set on a path toward war.  Unlike alliances from and strategies shift, but who will win the war?

Forced to pick sides in the fight to control of the earthly realm, Raffe and Penryn must choose, Their own kind, or each other?

This book was brutal, so much war, so much death, so much of everything that I wasn't expecting.  Raffe was...one moment he was fighting with Penryn and the next he had to fight with the Angels.  Penryn, poor girl, I felt for her, but one thing you will never see is her giving up.  She fought from the beginning of the first book until the end of this book, she is a fighter for sure.

But the end?  Epic for sure and you will not regret reading it...4.5 stars out of 5.

Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher

Guys, it's 11 days until Christmas eve, WHAT???? OMG, there is so much to do but also so much excitement, right? :)

And after talking about so much happiness it's time to review another book and this book it's not a happy book...let's just jump into the review:

Thirteen Reason Why by Jay Asher

1217100

Hannah Baker committed suicide and before she does it she decides to tape the thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life.  The all those reasons are people and after she is gone, those thirteen tapes start to make the rounds to the people that she felt were the reasons.

Clay Jensen returns home one day from school and he finds a mysterious box with his  name on it and inside is thirteen cassette tapes, he has no clue what they are until he plays the first one and realizes that they are recorded by Hannah Baker, his classmate and crush who committed suicide two weeks earlier.  At first he doesn't know what to make out of it, but then he realizes that he needs to listen to all of them, first of all to find how how he made it to the list and also to find out why Hannah decided to end her life.

This book was told by both Hannah point of view as Clay is listening to the tapes but also from Clay's point of view.  I took me a while to read this story, why?  It's a though topic and one that it's always hard to read and write about, right?

I'm not going to lie, Hannah's point of view was really interesting and you got to see why she made the decision that she made but when you are reading from Clay's point of view?  You can also see where he is also coming from and why didn't she asked for help more openly?  This is such an hard topic and it's such so hard to talk about it and I could see both points of view, that's all I'm going to stay.

At the end I think the author did a pretty good job with such a hard topic and I ended up giving a 4.25 stars out of 5.

XOXO,

Nelia

Book Review: Peak by Roland Smith

After the last book review, this book review is like a break, because this book was all about adventure and it was told by the eyes of a teenager boy (totally not something that I usually read).  Bottom line?  I really enjoyed it, so let's get to the review:

Peak by Roland Smith

Image result for peak by roland smith amazon

Peak is fourteen years old, lives in New York City and he loves climbing, which is a passion that he got from both his parents.  And because of his passion of climbing he decides to start climbing skyscrapers, however while doing one of his skyscrapers' climbing he gets caught and ends up in jail and sentenced.  In came is father who offers the to finish raising him halfway across the world so he can avoid going to jail or anything like that.  The judge agrees to it and Peak leaves on the same day with his dad.

When he is halfway around the world, Peak finds out that his dad has a different plan all along, he gives Peak the opportunity to climb Mount Everest and become the youngest climber to top the mountain ever.

I didn't think I would have enjoyed this book as much as I did, but I was wrong, Peak was so great as a main character and I loved reading from his point of view.  And I got to learn so much about Mount Everest and what it takes to actually climb it, it is not as easy as I thought it would be.

One of the other things that I loved about this book was the family issues and relationships, Peak could have been the trouble kid in New York City but once he was taken away from his mom, twin sisters and even step dad, he missed them and we got to see how much he wanted to go back to them.  And we also got to see his relationship with his dad, he loves him but not seeing your dad ever does take is toll and you get to see how much in a book like this.

And friendship, Peak created a friendship while across the world and wow, Peak grew up while there and what he did at the end?  That's a friend for sure...

Do I recommend Peak?  Totally, it was an easy read and not too long of a book either and you will love to learn about adventure, Mount Everest and friendship and family.

4.5 stars out of 5.

Book Review: It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover

If you haven't read any of Colleen Hoover books yet, then where have you been?  She is an amazing, amazing author and every book is just somehow different and amazing on it's own.  She just keeps on surprising me every time I pick up a new book of hers and every time there is a new one I just need to take a deep breath and hold off as long as possible because I know that she will break my heart somehow.  You don't believe me?  Then go and start reading one of her books, you don't have to start reading from her first book, just pick one, any one and come back and tell me if it's not true.

Okay, let's review her book that came out this August and that was...I don't think I have any words to really, really describe it, so let's just get to the review and maybe I will have a word by the end of it:

It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover

Image result for it ends with us by colleen hoover amazon

Lily didn't always had a good life but that never stopped her from working hard for the life that she wants.  She grew up in a small town in Maine, when she graduates college she moves to Boston and starts her own business.  Then she meets and falls for a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, and Lily thinks that everything in her life seems almost too good to be true. (Oh and she is right to think that way).

Ryle is stubborn, assertive and even a little bit arrogant.  But he is also sensitive, brilliant and has a total soft spot for Lily, but Ryle's aversion to relationships is just too disturbing.

Lily's new relationship with Ryle brings up thoughts and questions but it also makes her think of Atlas Corrigan, her first love and link to her a past she left behind and that she doesn't want to think about it.  Atlas was her first love, her protector and when he reappears in her life she starts to question everything she has now, even her new relationship with Ryle.

This love triangle is like nothing ever told before, Ryle and Lily's relationship started off so good and at the beginning of the book I wanted them to end up together and make the perfect life but as the book went on and we got to see more of Ryle and start to understand him?  It scared me, yes that's the right word and the only thing that I'm going to say because you need to read it to understand it.

Atlas?  I'm only going to say that he had a patience of a god, and everyone should have a friend, brother, boyfriend or husband like him.

Lily?  Wow, I don't even know where to start?  It Ends With Us, was the perfect title for this book and perfectly for her life.  She didn't deserve what happened to her and what a life that girl went through...

Conclusion?  This book, broke by heart in so many different ways, it broke my heart for the characters but also for all the women that goes through the same situations.  To Colleen Hoover?  Thank You!  For sharing, for writing this masterpiece and for everything in between.  Thank You!

5 out of 5 stars and if you haven't read it yet.  Please do it and you won't regret it.

XOXO,

Nelia

Book Review: The Rose and The Dagger by Renee Ahdieh

Oh it's time to review the second and unfortunately the last book of The Wrath and the Dawn duology.  I loved, loved, loved this duology, I just cannot tell you how much I loved it.  I loved the characters, Khalid is AH...amazing, I love him.  Shahrzad is fierce and not afraid of anything and I freaking love her.  The world?  Every time I was reading these books I just wanted to jump right in and live there lol.  All the side characters were lovely or monstrous and you just connect with everything that Renee writes.  I love her writing style and her work.  And let's stop right here and jump to this review...

The Rose and The Dagger by Renee Ahdieh

23308084

Shazi is forced away from Khalid all because of a curse.  A curse that threatens to keep both of them apart forever.

Shazi is reunited with her family, who have found refuge in a desert, but she isn't so sure about this place because in this desert there is a force set to destroy Khalid and his empire and the worst is that this force is commanded by Shazi's childhood sweetheart.  She finds herself trapped between those she loves and the only thing she can do is act.

Shazi finds herself using the magic within her as a guide and she strikes out on her own to end both the terrible curse and the war to come.  But in order to it she must evade enemies of her own to stay alive.

In this final book we get to see Shazi even more fierce and courageous than the first book, and this girl is not afraid to risk anything to save those that she loves.  And she is not afraid to face those that she hates the most to save the ones that she loves the most.  And I loved to see Shazi risking everything for her love for Khalid.  And Khalid?  He is so cute in this book, we got to see another side of him, but don't worry the crazy and courageous Khalid was there too.

I loved, loved to see Shazi's sister, she was everything that I thought she was going to be and when she got to meet Khalid?  Priceless...Tariq, I'm going to confess, there were times that he drove me crazy but like any sequel, by the end of the book I thought he was tolerable.  :)

Most of the other side characters I really enjoyed and loved, there were some new ones and old ones too and AH...you just connect with all of them and just be prepared to have your heart broken too.  That's all I'm going to say.

Overall, an amazing sequel and conclusion, 5 out of 5 stars for sure and these books did become some of my favorites this year!!!

Recommend? ABSOLUTELY!!!!

November 2016 Wrap Up

It's December, can you believe it? Because I sure can't...Christmas is just around the corner, my favorite Holiday but also the one that stress me the most lol.  Have you started your Christmas shopping yet?  I did, but don't think I almost done, because I'm not even one third done, I'm so behind and mostly because I don't know what to buy...AH I need to get my head together and put together a list and go out or buy my gifts online and get it over with.  On a brighter note, I will be putting my Christmas tree up this weekend, so maybe that will be me on a more cheerful mood :)

Back to today's topic which has nothing to do with Christmas, HAHAHA...let's talk about my November wrap up.  I started off the month pretty good but then I slacked off and wasn't reading much the last couple weeks, I blame Netflix and Gilmore Girls (who else watched the new Gilmore Girls episodes?  I just finished it yesterday because I didn't want to watch it all in one day and now I want more, especially how it all ended...I want MORE!!!).  Let's check out which books I read last month:

1. City of Souls by Cassandra Clare: 4 stars

Image result for city of lost souls cassandra clare

2. Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys: 5 stars

3.  The Mirror King by Jodi Meadows: 4.5 stars

8. Ten Thousand Skies Above You by Claudia Grey: Currently Reading-Half Way ( LOVING IT)

Seven and half books this month, not as much as I would have I wanted to have read but not too bad either.  I wanted to read a couple more books and I would have loved to have finished TTSAY but Gilmore Girls and Below Deck took priority lol.  Let's see how December goes with Christmas and everything, we shall see lol.

My favorite book this month?  Salth to the Sea for sure, I loved, loved that book and I still think of it to this day and I TOTALLY recommend everyone to read it, even if you don't usually read historical books you will still enjoy it.

What books did you read this month?  Which one was your favorite?

Book Review: The Flame and the Arrow by Emigh Cannaday

Guess what I'm back with?  If you said another book review, you are absolutely right, let's do this?  Okay, let's do it:

The Flame and the Arrow by Emigh Cannaday

29774760

Annika Brisby thinks she knows where her life is going until she steps through a broken portal that leaves her stranded in a realm of fairies, vampires, and other mythical beings.  Unable to return until it's repaired, she's rescued by wood nymphs who believe her sudden arrival is no accident.  After being taken in by a family of elves, Annika finds herself unable resist the seductive spell of their youngest son, Talvi.  He might be the perfect distraction for her homesickness.  Her friends warn her that she'll probably regret laying eyes on him, but what began as a casual fling quickly burn too hot to handle.  On the journey home she discovers that there's a mountain of secrets that he's not telling her, and Annika can't help wondering who's really in danger.

This book had so many promises and don't get me wrong I did enjoy reading it most of the time, but I felt that it was dragged out too long?  While Annika was stranded and trying to get back it was a little bit boring at times and it felt like nothing was happening until the action actually happened.  But when there were things happening the book was interesting and I did enjoyed it.

I never take too long reading a book but I took me forever to finish this one and I wish it didn't it. The end of the book was great and it kind of left me wanting to read the next one but at the same time I'm afraid that the next book is the same thing as the first and I will just not read it.   Let me know if you have read the next one and tell me if I should continue with this series.

I ended up giving this book 3.5 stars out of 5.

Nelia

Book Review: The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald

2016 has been a really great reading year, and one of my goals was to read more classics and I have been doing good, not great or amazing on that department but good.  And the book that I'm review next is a classic, one that I knew for sure that I was going to read and it was a small book so I knew that I was going to read this one and I'm glad that I did.  I didn't even remember reading this one at school, did I read it?  I have no idea, so I am really glad that I read it and know The Great Gatsby story, so let's get to it:

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

19304822

Jay Gatsby was a self-made millionaire who gave wild and lavish parties and those parties was attended by strangers.  And he was in love with the golden girl of a gilded era.

She was Daisy Buchanan, a young rich beauty with bright eyes and a passionate mouth.

But she was already married, even though her husband wasn't the most trustful one either.

In this novel set in the Twenties you will learn how the riches lived, how love was during that time and how marriage life was too.  How different everything was and how money played a roll on everything.

Gatsby was a man loved by many because of his lavish parties but when the main event happened?  You will then understand that how alone you can be at the end too.

The story is not told by Gatsby's perspective, it's actually told by Daisy's cousin's perspective and I it was really interesting at first but then you start to understand why it was told by him, you got to see how everyone around him acts.

I gave this book a 3.75 stars out of 5, I liked it and enjoyed reading but I admit there were some times that I just wanted it to finish it and see what the point of the whole book was about it.  But once we got there it was good.

Do I recommend it?  Of course, everyone should read it.

Book Review: Finding Kyler by Siobhan Davis

Holly Crap!!! Yes, that's how I'm going to start this post, because this book is like nothing you have read, yes it sounds and while you are reading will start to look like your typical YA romance book but the twists and turns that Siobhan throws at you?  Yes, there is nothing like a Siobhan twist...let's jump at the review:

I received a Beta Copy and an Advance Copy from the author Siobhan Davis for my honest review and here it is.

Finding Kyler by Siobhan Davis

32827843

Faye Donovan is alone in the world, she has just lost both her parents in a tragic accident.  But life just keeps playing tricks with her because out of nowhere an unknown uncle surfaces as her new guardian.  He shows up at her home in Ireland to pick her up and bring her all the way to the United States, away from everything she has known her whole life.

She isn't too happy but then again she doesn't have a choice as she is under age and she has to go with her new uncle and follow him to America, she decides to do it as her eighteen birthday is only a few months away.  Soon, Faye finds out that her Uncle is very, very wealthy and married to a fashion-empire-owing wife and they have more money than anyone should have.  Something else that they have more than enough is kids, seven in total and all boys and soon after meeting all of them Faye finds out that all seven are kind of screwed up on their own and things kind of turn into a nightmare.

The worst nightmare is when certain inappropriate feelings arise between Faye and Kyler Kennedy, her cousin.  He is off limits, for SURE.  And he is not the most friendly and welcoming of them all. Kyler is ignorant, moody and cruel at times, but for some reason, Faye starts to fee behind the mask he wears and they kind of start to get each other.

Kyler in the other hand has sworn off girls, he doesn't want to get involved with them.  But Faye starts to get under his skin, the more he pushes her away the more he wants her.

Together they decide to keep their feelings a secret, but a secret is dangerous, very, very dangerous.  Especially when other people have secrets of their own.

Screwed up family?  Let's talk about how screwed up this family really is, Faye's uncle for me is the most screwed up of them all and his marriage together with it.  The brothers?  Each of them have something going on and OH Man, six times screw ups (not counting Kyler) every time I though, Oh this one is not that bad, something about that one would appear. WHAT?  I just want to grab this whole family and rehabilitate it myself, they all need help, really bad.  Wait, I don't think I can do it, they all past the help.  Wait, I don't think I would mind rehabilitating some of the brothers, they are pretty hot lol.  Okay, back to some serious stuff, they all need help and hopefully we will get to see them getting some.

The end of the book, the twist was a freaking bomb that I wasn't not expecting and I really am hopping that it isn't true.  I have come up with a million different scenarios for it to not be real.  This is killing ME.

Seriously, if you love romance and drama, lots of it, them this book is definitively for you.

4.5 out of 5 stars.  Can't wait for the next one.

XOXO,

Nelia

Book Review: The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh

Oh, I'm sooo excited to review this next book, I had heard lots of good things about it and I went into it not expecting much because usually that's how I like to go into books that have been getting lots of hype.  But this one?  It totally blew my mind, I loved it so much that I went out and bought the physical copy of it and the second book too!!!!

Okay, let's get to the review:

The Wrath and The Dawn by Renee Ahdieh

Image result for the wrath and the dawn amazon

In a land ruled by a murderous boy-king, each dawn brings a heartache to a new family.  Khalid, the eighteen-year old Caliph of Khorasan, is a monster.  Each night he takes a new bride only to have a silk cord wrapped around her throat come morning.

When sixteen-year-old Shahrzad's dearest friend falls victim to Khalid, Shahrzad vows vengeance and volunteers to be his next bride.  Shahrzad is determined not only to stay alive, but to end the caliph's reign of terror once and for all.

Night after night, Shahrzad beguiles Khalid, weaving stories that enchant, ensuring her survival, though she knows each dawn could be her last.  But something she never expected begins to happen: Khalid is nothing like what she'd imagined him to be.  This monster is a boy with a tormented heart.  Incredibly, Shahrzad finds herself falling in love.  How is this possible?  It's a unforgivable betrayal.  Still, Shahrzad has come to understand all is not as it seems in this palace of marble and stone.  She resolves to uncover whatever secrets lurk and, despite her love, be ready to take Khalid's life as retribution for the many lives he's stolen.  Can their love survive this world of stories and secrets?

So, this book is based on the A Thousand and One Nights and that is one of the things that intrigued me but once I started reading what intrigued me more was Renee's writing style.  She writes beautifully and knows how to make you love these characters and she just knows how to describe a world where you actually can visualize and want to live in.  And the characters?  Oh boy, can she describe them and make you love them so much.

Shahrzard...WOW,  She is everything you want in a main character and more.  She takes risks that not even me would, that's for sure. She fights for her family and friends and she believes that she can change even the most hated man in her country.  Every time she was togethe rwith Khalid my heart would be jumping because I never knew what would come out of it, would he try to kill her?  Would he give him to her? Suspense, my friends, always suspense with these two.

Khalid, monster?  Cold heart murder?  Or is there something else?  Just let your heart open for him, trust me and you will not regret.  Maybe I do have something for bad boys, because I was rooting for Khalid since the beginning, I knew that his previous wives died but I also knew there was something else behind it.  And was I right?  You just have to read it to find out.  But I have to say that I really fell in love with his character, yes it may take you a little bit of time but give him a chance. :)

Side characters?   There are quite a few, but I'm not going to mention them because I feel that it will ruin the book, so get into to the blind as I did and find out for yourself and see if you like her maid, or Khalid's cousin, or Shahrzard's childhood friend.  These are some of the characters we were introduced.  And they do play a huge part in the books.

My rating?  5 out of 5 stars of course, I loved, loved this book.  I don't re read books, but this one would be one of the few that I would re read for sure :)

Nelia

Book Review: Dirty Aristocrat by Georgia Le Carre

Okay, this review is a genre that I don't reach for it that often but when I do? I want something done right, do you know what I mean?  And this book was done really, really well...the story sucked me in and yes there is sexy time and the main man is freaking hot (holly hot tamales lol) but what I liked about the book is that it had a story to tell and that kind of book is what I like.  Let's get to the review:

Dirty Aristocrat by Georgia Le Carre

29761397

Lord Ivan de Greystoke is a bad boy in every single way.  He has set his eyes on Tawny St John, the one woman who stirs possessiveness and desire in him.

She is nineteen, blonde, beautiful and married to Robert Maxwell.  Which makes her a gold digger and his freaking stepmother.  She has been totally unavailable to him, that is until now.

The old man is dead, she is the heir of a hundred million fortune, and Ivan is the executor of her trust.  But things are not as easy as it sounds.  All his stepsisters and stepbrothers feel robbed and are of opinion that Tawny should join her late husband asap.  At first he has no clue what to do, but then he comes up with the perfect solution, a fake marriage...to him.

Tawny doesn't know what to make of anything and anyone.  Everyone thinks she is a gold digger, even Ivan, the one man she cannot stop think about it.  But they don't know the whole story.

Tawny has a secret, it is a huge, huge secret, one that will blow their minds if they ever found out, but she isn't telling...never.

OMG, this book, it will engage you from the beginning.  First of all, you want to find out what Tawny's secret is and then you want her to tell Ivan the secret because you want them to be together.  But then you don't know if Tawny should trust Ivan, because you are not even sure is Ivan is to be trusted.  AH, this book had so many twists and turns but it was sooo good.  I wanted it to end but at the same it I didn't.  I really, really enjoyed.  Be prepared because there is lots of spice in it, Ivan is hot and he loves sex and he isn't afraid of showing it.  Tawny?  Poor Tawny, she has lots of learn...

Totally recommend this book, final words?  I gave it a 4 out of 5 stars.

XOXO,

Nelia

Book Review: Destined for Doon by Carey Corp and Lorie Langdon

Time for another book review, this is book 2 in the Doon series and here is book 1 review: Doon.  And without further doon, let's jump right into book two review:

Destined for Doon by Carey Corp and Lorie Langdon

22055556

Mackenna Reid, stars to realize that she made a big mistake in choosing to follow her dreams of Broadway instead of staying in the enchanted land of Doon.  And to make matters worse, she's received her Calling, proof she and Duncan are each other's true love.  Now she is going crazy, especially every time she has a vision of the Scottish prince and the worse is when she has the visions right before she goes on stage.

So, when Duncan shows up right before her again she doesn't believe it at first but this time he is really there and the reason he is there isn't good.  Duncan tells her an ancient curse threatens to overtake Doon and the new Queen needs her to return and Kenna doesn't have to think twice about going back to Doon.

Kenna and Vee are together in Doon and they must battle a world of nightmares in order to protect the kingdom.  But Kenna will be the one who will have the ultimate test to salvage her happily ever after.

These books remind me of The Selection, they are cheezy and another guilty pleasure, because they are fun to read.  And I really love the romance between Kenna and Duncan, they are my favorite couple :)  Vee has a lot going on in this book with the Kingdom and by the end of the book when you thought everything is taken care of?  There is another twist and a cliffhanger, Oh My...I can't wait to read the next book and find out what happens next.

I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars and I really recommend it if you are looking for a light read, one with lots of laugh, romance and Scottish boys :)

Have you started reading the Doon series yet?

Book Review: Happily Ever After by Kiera Cass

Who's read The Selection series?  I know a lot people either hate or love this series and I?  I love it, I feel like this series was my guilty pleasure.  And I usually read these books in a day or two so it really didn't take much from my reading time.

Anyways, once I was done reading The Crown, I went back to GoodReads and see if I was done reading all the Novellas and Happily Ever After is the bundle of all the Novellas for The Selection series, so I went to my eLibrary and put a hold on it, it was easier to get through this one because I had read most of the Novellas and I really wanted to read the bonus scenes, Bonus Epilogue and a Where are they now? in the back of the book and I wanted that instead of reading the only Novella that I was missing so...

But I will leave you the link with my reviews for the Novellas that I had read and reviewed already.  Let's do this:

Happily Ever After by Kiera Cass

24465724

The Prince and The Guard: I had read these ones a while back so feel free to read the reviews, they are together with the review for The One.

The Queen: Review is done alone for this one; I don't know, maybe because I really loved this one a lot.

The Favorite: This is the Novella that I still hadn't read and the reason that I wanted to read this bundle.  This is Marlee's novella, this novella is when Marlee falls in love with Carter and they are caught and punished for it.  But in this novella we get to see how Marlee and Carter suffer after the punishment and how these two stick to each other and support each other even though they are in so much pain.  And we also get to see how Prince Maxon helped them.  It was what I wanted so 5 out of 5 stars.

Three scenes from Celeste's POV: This totally surprised me, don't get me wrong, I didn't fall head over heels for Celeste but it let us see another side of her and she wasn't a total, total b.tch.  I liked this one, 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Lucy's scene (bonus scene): This scene is from Lucy's POV, America's maid, I just want to say I that I would have lived without this one. 2 out of 5 stars.

The bonus epilogue: Not going to say anything about it but it was okay I guess, I  really enjoyed read it 4 out of 5 stars.

Where are they now?  I think this part was one of the most fun things to read in this book.  We got to see where all the other girls are now and doing with their lives. 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Can we mention that there is a map and some illustrations in this book also?  So cool!!!

I gave the book a 5 out of 5 stars and that's because I loved The Prince, The Queen and The Favorite novellas and that's the majority of them.

Which ones where your favorites?

Book Review: A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Maas

Let's start by talking about book hangovers, who has had them?  I usually don't have them, and if I have one it's usually gone in a day as I have really great books to read next but this book? OMG, I can close my eyes and get that book hangover ALL OVER AGAIN.  This is for sure one of my favorite books of 2016 and probably of many people too.  I cannot wait for the next book to come out, MAY 2017?  That's way too far out and can we please get a cover already, I need a cover reveal now, right now, okay...maybe not now but maybe this year still? Pretty Please????

If don't know what book I'm talking about?  It's the second book in A Court of Thorns and Roses, I really enjoyed the first book a lot, and I knew that I was going to read the second one once it came out.  But...OH MAN, this book was 1MILLION times better than I thought it was going to be.  Alright, let's get to the review and if you haven't read the first one (click above to read the review) this review will contain spoilers so don't read it and spoil yourself, just read the first book first.

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

17927395

Feyre survived Amarantha and she has returned to the Spring Court, but at a steep cost.  Though she has the powers of the High Fae, her heart remains human, and it cannot forget the terrible deeds she performed to save Tamlin's people.

Nor has Feyre forgotten her bargain with Rhysand, High Lord of the feared Night Court.

As Feyre navigates through dard politics, passion and power, a greater evil looms and she might be the key to stop it all.  But only if can harness her harrowing gifts, heal her soul and decide how she wishes to shape her future-and the future of a world torn apart.

Feyre...OH Feyre, when the book started she was so broken that I didn't think she was going to be able to bounce back, but she bounced back and way stronger than she was before.  Someone not only strong but someone that they should be afraid of, I cannot wait to see more of Feyre, she is going to be so badass in the next book, I can see already.

Rhysand...well, well, well, where I can start?  I going to star to say he is hot and dangerous and everything you want, am I right?  But he has another side that only Feyre was able to see and I love him more because of that.  Rhys

Tamlin...I don't want to talk about him, because I don't want to spoil the book for anyone, but I will just say, go in with an open mind.  Broken heart...

So many side characters was introduced in this book and can I say that I loved them?  Feyre need a girl friend and she has it now.  LOVE IT.  And the others?  I'm just going to say, I love all of them :)  Well, let me rephrase that, I love all the side characters at The Night Court, there, that's better :)

So, to end this crazy review, I'm just going to say it was 5 out of 5 stars and it was an amazing review and I cannot recommend this series but especially this book enough.  SO, go read it, NOW.

XOXO,

Nelia

Book Review: The Winner's Kiss by Marie Rutkoski

Have you started reading The Winner's Trilogy yet?  If you haven't, OH My, you are missing out on one of the best trilogies written yet.  Let's start by saying that it's Unique, because there really isn't another like it out there.  The romance?  OMG, yeah it's totally unique too and you will see yourself falling for the characters like nothing before.  The world?  Amazing.  And the characters?  You finish the book and you start to crave more for them all over again.  I haven't sold you yet?  Here, read my review on the first book: The Winner's Curse and then after you read that one or if you have read that one you can read my review on the second book The Winner's Crime.  And of course if you have read both of them and are here to read the third book's review, I'm going to shut up and get to it :)

Well, at least that's what he thought...

In the north, Kestrel is a prisoner in a brutal work camp.  She tries every day for a way to escape and she wishes that Arin would know what she sacrificed for him.  And more than anything she wishes she could make the Empire pay for what they have done to her.

But no one gets what they want just because they wish for, right?  Or maybe they do?

The war intensifies and both Kestrel and Arin discover that the world is changing, one side is against the other and they are both caught in between.  With so much to lose can anybody really win?

Will Kestrel escape the work camp?  What about the war?  Who will win?  Will Arin find out what Kestrel did for him and forgive her finally?

This book was everything you wanted in a final book and more.  I loved, loved and loved this book.  You got action from the war.  You got to see how the relationship between Arin and Kestrel resolved and I'm not going to say anything more about it because there was so much development in that department that you really need to read the book.  And I loved so many of the side characters in this book, they are amazing in their own way, but they also made the book too.

5 out of 5 stars for sure.  I wouldn't mind if Marie Rutkoski made these books into a series instead of a trilogy, because you easily could have done it, because of the political and war issues that happened...but she sure knew how to end it well in just three books, well done.  I'm sure going to miss these characters and I really do see myself re reading these books again in the future.

TOTALLY recommend this trilogy.

Book Review: The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson

I guess Summer 2016 was a Morgan Matson summer, but who is complaining?  Not me and if you haven't started reading one of her books, trust me you are the one who is losing on some great friendship and romance books.  So, don't wait, go and start reading her books!!!

And here is a review for one of her books, this one was her newest book out but still amazing, let's do this:

The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson

17838528

Andie has her summer all planned out, she is a politician's daughter and she pretty has much raised herself and she has since learned that everything can be planned or spun or both.  Especially your future.

What has Andie planned for her summer: internship? Check.  Amazing friends? Check. Guys? Check, as long as they don't last more than three weeks.

But then the scandal happened and her plans start to fall apart.  Her internship gets cancelled and now she finds herself in the same house with her dad, something that she is not used to it.  She has to get out of the house so she finds a summer job walking dogs, literally.  And then she meets Clark and her life changed.

Soon, Andie finds herself living a completed different summer than she planned, an unexpected summer of everything that she planned but she starts to realized that everything happens for a reason.

I have to admit, Andie?  It took me a little bit of time to warm up to her, but eventually you do and then there is the friendships and the family life that Morgan Matson just knows how to write and get you to love it.  You have to realize this book was over 500 pages and yes there was some times in the book that was a little slow but overall?  It was still great and I really enjoying it and gave it a 4 out of 5 stars and do I recommend it?  Yes, totally.

What is your favorite Morgan Matson book?

Weekend Reads: Sapphire Blue and Watchmen

What a crazy week this was and crazy weekend ahead too :)  What do you guys have planned?  I have lots of errands tomorrow, including picking up our boat to storage for the winter (boo) and then more errands with the kids Sunday, but I also plan to do lots of reading when I can, that's for sure :)
