Book Review: Seeker by Arwen Elys Dayton

Book Review Tuesday and today is a book that I got an ARC from Netgalley a few weeks ago:

Seeker by Arwen Elys Dayton

This book follows 3 characters Quin, John and Shinobu, 3 teenagers who have trained all their lives to become Seekers, something that have been in their families for generations and they cannot wait for the day to become one.

Quin and Shinobu have lived all their lives in the camp with their families and with their fathers who are current Seekers, but John has been sent to the camp at age of 12 to be trained as a Seeker, which makes him an outsider as he is there alone without family, but Quin and Shinobu love John as their true friend.  They train everyday to become a Seeker, someone who will protect the weak and the wronged, together will stand for light in a shadowy world. But things don't always go according to plan, right?

First of all, Quin's father, Briac Kincaid doesn't allow John to take his oath and sends him back to his grandfather.  And the night that Quin and Shinobu take their oath their lives changed forever, the idea of a Seeker was totally different from what it really was.  To say they were disappointed is underestimated.

After Quin and Shinobu take their oaths they are different people and they don't know how to react or what to do and they don't even have the time to process it as John comes back to camp on a mission of his own.  You see, John only wanted to become a Seeker so he could take back something that Briac took from his family and now he is back to take it one way or another.  He asks Quin to help him, but she denies the help, telling him that he should never become a Seeker, that it's not something nice, it's something dark and dangerous.  There is a battle where John takes Quin's mother as a hostage and Quin does everything to get her back, Quin and Shinobu escape the battle but not before she is shot but John. Shinobu takes Quin and her mother Fiona to Hong Kong where promises are made and months go by with nothing much going on...until John reappears again looking for the same item and more battles are fought and we get to find out more about the Seekers and the elements that make them Seekers.

I don't want to give too much away because things really start to pick up after Hong Kong and lots more information and details are explained there.  But I can say that of course there is a love triangle, and I don't really mind love triangle but this one?  I not so sure I like this one so much, I team John, I felt like Quin never gave him a chance to explain why he needed her help.  And Shinobu, what the heck, I know he went thru a lot, but drugs?  Not a fan, sorry.  And Quin?  She was a badass character only at the very end of the book and we really needed that from the beginning, so I really hope in the next book she doesn't decided to just forget to block all her memories again because it's just too much for her.  Oops, I may have given a little bit too much over there, oh well.

Overall, I gave this book a 4 out of 5 stars, I did enjoy reading and finding about the world and some of the characters, you do get to meet other characters besides these three and you get to read from one of them, which I really enjoyed, I felt it was the missing piece from the puzzle. And yes, I will be reading the next book as I cannot wait to find out what the heck is going to happen next.

And that will do for today.  Did you read Seeker yet?  What book are you reading now?  I'm off to read Ruby Circle AH...

XOXO,

Nelia
